… unfortunately, it rarely makes it to the top of the list and as a result it simply doesn’t get done. We can’t pretend it’s a pleasant conversation but once done, you will have a great sense of relief. According to a report from The National Will Register, 42% of adults in the UK have not spoken to anyone about what should happen to their estate upon their passing.
Having a will isn’t something you do for yourself. It’s about protecting your loved ones and making things easier for them after you’ve gone. At a time when your family are trying to come to terms with their loss, a will cuts out huge amounts of work and potential conflict.

There are lots of reasons why you should have a will.
- Control your assets: Decide who gets what, including your home, money, and other possessions. If you don’t have a will there is a flow chart which is used to determine who inherits your possessions. This may not align to your views and wishes.
- Name your children’s guardians: Ensure your children are cared for financially and by someone you trust. If you don’t make this decision, a court will, and they may have a very different decision-making process to you!
- Avoid disputes: Reduce the chance of conflict over how your estate is divided. Sad but true, many families fall out over inheritance.
- Reduce inheritance tax: Minimize how much tax is paid on what you leave to family and charity. You’ve paid enough tax all your life already!
- Speed up probate: A will informs the court how you want your estate divided, which can reduce delays.
